It was announced at Hart Council that some Army training land adjacent to Pyestock is to be released to provide SANG for the proposed 1,500 home Hartland Village development. This is a big step forward in securing this important new development for the Hart Local Plan.
Stephen Parker was quoted as saying:
Finally, after my meetings in the Spring with the Secretary of State for Defence and the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and following correspondence, yesterday I met along with officers the Commander of the Army training organisation in the South East. The objective was to seek the release of some of the Army training estate to facilitate development at Pyestock and elsewhere. I am pleased to announce that they have indicated an area adjacent to the Pyestock site, next to other Army training land which in turn adjoins Fleet Pond, which a preliminary estimates will be sufficient for the Pyestock site. It still needs senior approvals, but as the training organisation has made it clear that they can spare this from their operational requirements, I do not anticipate a problem.
We now have a better understanding of the military utilisation of these areas, and there may be scope for future conversations
This is excellent news.
If Hartland Village is going to be 1500 homes on a 135 acre site, why are there proposals for only 700 homes on a 146acre site at elvetham chase? Just curious?

I have no idea about parking charges. But they need (from memory) 8Ha per 1000 people. The army land will support around 1500 dwellings. The RSPB land will help Sun Park meet its potential and perhaps leave surplus SANG for Rushmoor near the Hart boundary. There’s lots of vacant offices in Southwood.

Following the proposed purchase of Bramshot farm from the RSPB and the release of army land for SANG (which is a larger area than pyestock), have the council got a plan for this land already? Or is it a way of charging the public through maintenance and ‘enhancments’. It seems large enough to accommodate a country park car park with a £2 per hour fee. I’m sure I’m wrong as the council wouldn’t dream of using this to make money from its residents lol 🙂

I really think it’s a shame that this urban extension to Fleet, with all its negative impact on the surrounding area (including a nature reserve) is even being considered. I also agree that this SANG is hardly going to compensate. A much better approach would be to encourage the developers to swap the Pyestock area for a more suitable development area and incorporate Pyestock into the nature reserve. That way all parties would benefit, and benefit to much greater extent than they would by creating this urban extension.

Bear in mind that a huge area of the Army training land was previously accessible to cyclists and dog use but has now been restricted – because more troops have moved in. The MOD can do this at will. By having the land as SANG it keeps the land for public use in perpetuity, and can be maintained as a county Park – and improved, permitting better public access and use.
Steve Forster – Steve what are the new restrictions on access? i.e. specifically which areas can no longer be used? I’m interested because I (bike) ride on the army land.

Chris Blake I think others can cover that more effectively than I but there’s lots of info out there including http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13019998

Thanks Steve.
Thanks Steve.
The piece of land in question Steve is hardly ever used for training, thanks to a bridleway running through it. In practice the bridleway means no blank firing within 200m (I think that’s the number). It is very poor training land – hence little used. An FOI would determine just how much…
So as the public already have a right of access for recreational purposes (section 2 Aldershot Military Land Act) unless there is training (like never…) AND actually comes with a right of way across it, what actually is the local community getting in exchange for yet more development?
Short answer; with respect to public space, precisely nothing with this proposed SANG.
And please, do not convert it into a “country park”. There are enough of those…leave it wild as that kind of space is in very short supply…I would feel happier if MoD retained stewardship if a country park was seen as a good idea…

Rob et al – the land already has a public right of way and may be used by the public for recreation when not in use by the military. In the 40 years I have accessed that bit of land…I can remember the military using it…about zero when compared with other places.
So on that basis, I am not sure what this SANG is actually giving us that we do not already enjoy?

It is also home to a huge amount of wildlife.
The army training land adjacent to Pyestock is already a beautiful green space used by the public.
Isn’t this a great re-purpose of army land, to become green space for the public?
I don’t know. The alternative for SANG was Bramshott Farm, which is apparently owned by the RSPB, but they were playing hardball on the price they wanted to sell it for. Now they have nothing, but maybe a negotiation can be had if there is an alternative on the table.
Why are you dreading a SANG being created?
When are the public going to see the extent of extra land to be used?
I was dreading this.
